Milkfish farming is increasing day by day because it has a good demand. Milkfish grows fast and can tolerate a wide range of salinity. Culture of Milkfish in brackish-water ponds and pens is an age-old and traditional practice though Milkfish can be farmed in freshwater ponds, lakes, reservoirs and marine cages also. Wild seeds are collected during March to June and September to December from coastal states of India. Fry are more abundant during the new and full moon periods. 

Its herbivorous feeding habit, which reduces production cost and gives more profit to the farmer. Growth rate compared to other herbivorous fishes are fast and it can readily accept formulated pellet feed under culture like other cultivable species like Shrimps, Mullet, Tilapia,and Carps,etc. Due to Non “ Cannibalistic nature stocking density can be high in culture conditions compared to other finfishes. Its shiny, attractive appearance makes it potential live bait in the tuna industry. Its low disease occurrence, which reduces the risk of sudden mass mortality and leads to higher profit to the farmer.
